About Us and Our Suppliers

Ngiri Bar & Restaurant (pronounced 'Nn-gear-ree') opened in May 2008
and is owned and managed by Darren and Emma Geary who moved to Kenya from England in 2006.

On safari we discovered that our surname sounds like the Swahili word for 'warthog' (ngiri)!
We were constantly teased by our friends over this coincidence and decided to go the 'whole hog'
and name the restaurant after one of Africa's most loved animals.
Warthogs are sociable animals, spending their days feeding and drinking at waterholes
in the company of others - welcome to Ngiri!

When we opened Ngiri we wanted to be a positive element within the community
and as part of this we source our ingredients carefully.
All our eggs are free-range and are supplied by Diani Children's Village
who are also our suppliers of our chickens; the Village looks after orphaned and abandoned children
from the Diani and Ukunda area.
Our pork comes from Hans & Dagmar's respected farm in the Shimba Hills
and our honey comes from the busy bees in the Shimba Hills.

Our seafood is purchased fresh from the Fisherman's Co-operative; a community initiative
that ensures that the fishermen are paid a fair price for their catch!

Our fresh juices are made locally using fruits from the south coast.

Our furniture was handmade by local fundis (craftsmen) using local materials.
